Treatment for a mental health problem

White curve

If you are struggling with your mental health or have been diagnosed with a mental health problem, there are treatments available that can help.
Contact your GP or at least talk to someone about how you are feeling. You are not alone and help is available.

Medication and talking therapies

Your GP can prescribe medication for mental health problems such as depression and anxiety; other medication may be prescribed in conjunction with a psychiatrist or other mental health specialist. Your GP can also refer you to specialist mental health services for other types of treatment.

You can access NHS talking therapies through the Improving Access to Psychological Therapies programme (IAPT). The NHS Choices website has more information on this.

You may choose to seek help from a private therapist for yourself, a friend or family member. The Charlie Waller Trust only recognises evidence-based therapies such as cognitive behavioural therapy, as recommended by the National Institute for Clinical Excellence.

You will want to be sure that any therapist is properly qualified and registered with an appropriate professional body. We cannot recommend an individual or an organisation, but the websites below all provide lists of accredited therapists.

British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP’s primary purpose is to support counsellors and help them better serve their clients. The BACP website features a search tool to help people find a local therapist.
